WHY CHOSE
"STRONGER FOR LONGER?"
As we age.
The hard reality is that once we hit our 30’s are muscles begin to decline at a rate of approximately 5% per decade. Wow!
Research conducted on the grip strength of 1000 men over a 25 year period, indicates that for every 1kg increase in grip strength the risk of death was reduced by 0.9%.
We also know that as women pass through menopause their bone density reduces. By regularly incorporating strength training we not be not only improve muscle strength but importantly bone strength. This means greater functionality as we age and also reduces the risk of fractures through falls, which can lead to health complications, including death.
So, as you can see, strength is directly linked to longevity, whether you’re male or female. We should all be aiming to be stronger for longer.
Now where are those weights?
Running a marathon
Someone once said to me as I stood on the start line for my first marathon ‘you know the first 20 miles are a run up to the ‘real’ start line, don’t you?
A statement more than a question but how correct it was and still is.
As we pass the 20 mile mark our bodies are quite literally exhausted and it’s only by putting the correct preparation in place that we can cross that finish line strong.
There are multiple training programmes that focus on runs and mileage; which are, of course essential, but don’t neglect the strength and conditioning.
Incorporating S&C into your marathon training could be the difference that sees you achieve your PB. Stronger for longer.
Climbing a mountain
Achieving a bucket list dream of climbing a mountain, such as Kilimanjaro, has never been so possible. Whether it’s for a charity fundraiser, a personal challenge or both, with the right clothing, support and mindset it is certainly a realistic ambition. However, there’s a difference in how it’s achieved.
Without training it can be a long slog, where the huge effort required is all consuming and at the end all you think is ‘never again’.
Whereas with the correct strength and cardio training, it’s still a long slog, but a whole much happier experience, as energy levels are higher and muscle fatigue reduced; you remember the views, the experience, the achievement and look forward to your next challenge.
Stronger for longer.
